Morphsuits

Seminar summer semester 2021

The façade forms the outer "suit" of every building that characterises the urban space. It not only represents the functional interface between the interior and exterior, but also gives the building its own identity.

Like human skin, the façade can do more than just provide protection when activated. For example, raising the hair not only changes the appearance of an animal but also has a heat-insulating functional effect. High levels of sunlight discolour our skin to protect the cells from radiation and thus also change our appearance. These are just a few examples of how adaptation and design also interact in nature. They are examples that we use as parallels in architecture.

In the seminar, we will work out what an activated façade can achieve and what added value we can derive from it for the buildings of the future. In doing so, we will analyse the activation both in terms of movement and function. Another focus will be the design integration of such systems into the façade and the synergies that can arise between activation and design. At the beginning, we will get to know various realised systems and in the second step, we will work out a possible design integration of a selected activation on an example façade.
