The cauldron is full. Rents in Stuttgart's city centre continue to rise and additional space cannot be built without replacing an old building at great expense in terms of resources. This not only leads to a lot of disruption during the construction period, but is also expensive, resource-intensive and has a very negative footprint.
This is where we want to start: The design explores the possibilities of using lightweight construction to add one or more storeys to existing buildings. The aim is to find potential for adding storeys within the Stuttgart basin and to extend these with a suitable construction. All traditional and experimental lightweight construction materials are available to the students.
The addition of storeys can be planned on public buildings such as car parks, ministries, department stores etc. as well as on private houses.
In terms of design, both the connection to the existing building and accessibility should be taken into account.
The spatial programme includes at least one residential unit of approx. 80 m2 and one office of approx. 70 m2.
