SolFiberHouse - Solar fibre roof construction

Design studio summer semester 2023

"Building on instead of tearing down" is the motto of the SolFiberHouse project. Instead of repeating what we have seen, we want to develop new ideas with you on how to combine lightweight extension constructions with the latest in solar construction. The design focus is on ultra-lightweight constructions made of fibre composites, with a focus on material efficiency and sustainability. At the same time, the building should be as energy-self-sufficient as possible. This means that solar radiation will play a central role in terms of energy. Both passively for heating and actively for energy generation and through solar cooling with a façade-integrated cooling system developed at the University of Stuttgart.

A supporting structure made of fibre composite nodes not only enables free design but also creates new spatial qualities. We need new building materials and want to explore with you how new supporting structures and envelopes can lead to different designs.

Your design should be a pilot project with charisma that is placed on the roof of a well-known/iconic building in Stuttgart. The plot/building must be presented with a suitable use at the first meeting. If no building is available for the extension, the Institute will award an interesting high-rise building.

We would be delighted if the resulting designs were submitted for the "Dachwelten 2023" competition.

At the first meeting, the solar cooling system to be integrated will be presented and an overview of fibre composites will be given.
