Roller test bench for hydrogen-powered heavy goods vehicles

As part of the decarbonisation of road transport, heavy-duty vehicles in particular, including lorries, tractors and construction machinery, will also be equipped with a hydrogen-powered fuel cell drive in the future. Performance and consumption, as well as the behaviour of the vehicles under extreme weather conditions, are measured and tested in a chassis dynamometer equipped with a climate chamber and a wind tunnel. The findings obtained on the roller test bench form the basis for future requirement profiles and regulations for heavy goods vehicles. The chassis dynamometer is therefore not only a measuring station, but also a research facility for creating the conditions for the production of standardised series vehicles. At a location in the greater Stuttgart area, which is yet to be announced, the DLR Institute of Vehicle Concepts, in co-operation with TÜV Süd, is planning a corresponding chassis dynamometer with facilities for the conversion of vehicles and with office and measuring rooms for technical and scientific staff and an institute management. The design task concerns the structural design of this technically and creatively demanding construction task.
